Wendy’s

Bringing an Icon to Life

Some brand assets are instantly recognizable. The challenge is making them feel alive.

When Wendy’s wanted to introduce its iconic logo as an animated character within its national television
campaigns, Bark was tasked with creating a performance that felt expressive, charming, and unmistakably
Wendy’s. The objective wasn’t simply to animate a logo—it was to establish a character system that could become
a recurring storytelling device across future advertising.

To make that possible, Bark developed an animation pipeline centered around a custom character rig built by Jim
McCullough. Every element of the character was designed for expressive control, from eye blinks and nuanced
mouth shapes to the signature movement of Wendy’s pigtails. Secondary 3D effects—including animated tears and
condensation beads—added subtle details that enhanced emotion, comedy, and realism while preserving the clean
graphic style of the brand.

The success of the character also depended on careful planning before cameras ever rolled. Bark’s VFX team
collaborated closely with the production team to coordinate every visual effects requirement in advance, from
tracking markers and rigging to on-set execution. That preparation streamlined the post-production process and
ensured the animated performances integrated naturally into each scene. Jim McCullough and Bryan Keeling then
worked alongside editor Jon Bazata, colorist Nick Balda, and Bark’s compositing and finishing artists to refine every
performance and seamlessly blend the character into the live-action footage. The result was a character that didn’t
simply appear in the commercials—she interacted with the other on-camera talent to create natural, believable
dialogue.

The success of the inaugural campaign quickly established Wendy as a recurring on-screen personality. The
flexible rig and animation workflow enabled multiple Bark VFX artists to continue bringing the character to life
across additional national television spots, expanding her range while maintaining consistency in performance,
timing, and design.

What began as a single creative assignment evolved into an enduring production asset. By combining character
animation, visual effects, and collaborative finishing, Bark transformed one of advertising’s most recognizable logos
into a memorable on-screen performer—creating a scalable system that continues to support Wendy’s storytelling
across national campaigns.
